Semiotics
This is the study of signs, symbols and how we interpret them. There are two parts to a sign, the signifier of denotation and the signified connotation. Denotation is what is shown to the eye and what we first see, the connotation is then what is informed by the denotation. So connotation is what we understand from the sign.
